Pursuing passion comes with sacrifices, but when does it turn into self-destruction? From turning down Total Oil & Gas to choosing youth empowerment over a traditional career, my journey at StarLab Academy has been filled with tough decisions. Learn how purpose, balance, vision, and self-awareness define whether a risk is worth taking.
I'm overwhelmed by the results we've achieved so far in our Skill Development and Empowerment programs at StarLab Academy. But let me be honest—they came with a level of sacrifice that was far from easy.
I had to make some tough choices along the way. For instance, after completing my program in Mechanical Engineering at Yabatech, my first love, I secured a job in an IT/Tech firm immediately after presenting my final project. I could have continued my education in China, but I decided to pursue leadership and entrepreneurship courses at the University of Maryland instead.
Then, around 2017 or 2018, I turned down an opportunity to work at Total Oil and Gas—one of the most sought-after jobs—because of my growing passion for developing young people.
These decisions were sacrifices, not suicides, because they were driven by a deep-seated passion for empowering others. That’s the crux of it: Ensuring you give everything it takes to pursue your passion, not otherwise.
Any loss caused while pursuing your passion is a sacrifice. But a loss caused while doing something you don't like? That's suicide.
Take Steve Jobs, who sacrificed stability to build Apple from his garage. His vision changed the world. But remember the story of Icarus from Greek mythology—a cautionary tale of ambition without balance. Flying too close to the sun with wings made of wax, Icarus’ dream melted away, leading to his downfall.
Sacrifice is about giving up something valuable for a greater cause. It’s the sleepless nights, missed social events, and relentless grind that leads to monumental achievements. But when does this drive turn into self-destruction? When you give up everything for something that isn't worth it.
So, how do we know the difference?
1. Purpose: Make sure your sacrifice is driven by a clear, meaningful goal. If the endgame is blurry or influenced by external pressures, it might be a risk not worth taking.
2. Balance: Even as you sacrifice, maintain boundaries. Legends like Michael Jordan pushed themselves to the limit, but they knew when to recharge, avoid burnout, and stay grounded.
3. Vision: Ensure your long-term vision is worth the cost. Sacrifices should lead to growth, not regret. Oprah Winfrey, for example, faced numerous sacrifices, but each one was a step toward building an empire that aligned with her values and mission.
4. Self-Awareness: Know your limits and stay true to your core values. Don’t let the pursuit of a goal make you lose sight of who you are.
In the end, whether it’s a sacrifice or self-destruction is up to you. Just remember, some risks are worth taking—others, not so much. Choose wisely, and let your journey be one of growth, not loss.
